At the end of April, we celebrated the amazing work of our dedicated tax prep volunteers, who prepared over 670 returns this tax season and helped people making less than $49,000 get the tax refunds they deserve. One of the biggest refunds is the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can be several thousands of dollars. This is huge for our clients whose average adjusted gross income is $21,958.
The U.S.’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is one of the largest anti-poverty tools in the United States. It refunds some or all of the taxes that low-income working people pay.
It is estimated that 20-25% of eligible individuals don’t file for the EITC because of: misinformation about eligibility, complexity and length of tax forms and language barriers. Having a free, bi-lingual tax site like ours saves even more money, since commercial tax filing services are expensive and often take advantage of low-income tax filers by offering high interest loans on tax returns.
We are grateful to the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! project of the United Way of the Bay Area and the Mary Wohlford Foundation for making it possible for us to help so many.
…. and to our wonderful volunteers! We couldn’t do it without you!
